5.2 Integrate Puppet with CloudFormation

Create and run a CloudFormation template
You can also integrate the Puppet infrastructure automation tool into CloudFormation. As mentioned, while CloudFormation provides you a lot of power to script the configuration of AWS resources, it’s restricted to AWS resources. Puppet and others tools like it allow you to script your infrastructure outside the context of any cloud provider such as AWS. So, the point is that you can script your entire infrastructure in a tool like Puppet. You can also script your entire AWS infrastructure in nothing but CloudFormation. Instead, you’re going to use both of the tools so that you can leverage the best of both CloudFormation and Puppet. CloudFormation is best for defining the static creation of AWS resources while leveraging the dynamic nature of AWS resources. Puppet’s strength is that it’s a more expressive language for defining actions that occur within the instances once they’ve been provisioned.
- From your local GitHub repository, go to devopsinthecloud/infrastructure/templates/ and open the my mytarget.template file. A copy of the file is located at https://github.com/stelligent/devopsinthecloud/blob/master/infrastructure/templates/
Within the Parameters section, add the following parameters to the CloudFormation mytarget.template file.

Within the Outputs section, add the following parameters to the CloudFormation mytarget.template file. Outputs is an optional section where you return values to the user of the CloudFormation stack. Outputs are displayed in the Outputs section in the Management Console and when running the cfn-describe-stacks command.

CloudFormation with Puppet
Launch CloudFormation stack based on template
- Click this link to launch CloudFormation.
- Click the Create New Stack button
- Enter a name in the Stack Name field.
- Click the Upload a Template File radio button and the Choose File button. Upload the mytarget.template you created and click the Continue button.
- Modify any of the parameters as necessary and complete the rest of the wizard.
